We gather this morning with a mixture of grief and optimism. Grief, because someone you loved and who loved you is no longer here for you to hold close and speak with. And optimism, because we all know how N. loved God and prepared himself/herself to meet Him. Because of N’s faith in God’s promise, we have good reason to hope that N. will stand before God today rejoicing in the wedding feast of heaven and praying for us.

Though today is a day to remember God’s promises to N. and to pray for the repose of his/her soul, funerals are not only for those who have passed away, but for the living who stay behind. Funerals are an opportunity for us to face…
